Austin power-unit penalties: Bortoleto drops 20 places, Colapinto 10
FIA stewards handed three drivers grid drops in Austin on Friday for exceeding their power-unit component allowances: Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto takes 20 places and Alpine's Franco Colapinto 10. A five-place penalty for Racing Bulls' Arvid Lindblad is not confirmed after the FIA recalled the document. This Saturday's (local) qualifying result will have these numbers applied to it to set the race starting order.
Who got what
According to grandprix.com, all three stewards' decisions were issued on Friday, and they are penalties for using additional components rather than for driving infringements. The technical delegate's report flagged the breaches first, and the stewards' rulings confirmed the consequences.
| Driver (team) | Extra components fitted | Penalty |
|---|---|---|
| Bortoleto (Audi) | Fourth energy store, fourth control electronics | 10 places each, 20 in total |
| Colapinto (Alpine) | Fourth control electronics | 10 places |
| Lindblad (Racing Bulls) | Sixth internal combustion engine (ICE) | 5 places (recalled, unconfirmed) |
Why Lindblad's five places are on hold
The two reports differ. grandprix.com says Lindblad received five places, but Coffee Corner Motorsport reports that the stewards issued a five-place document and the FIA has since recalled it. It gives no reason for the recall and says it will update once the position is clear. Lindblad's penalty should therefore be treated as open until the FIA issues a further document.
Practice form and the grid
The penalties apply to each driver's next race, the US Grand Prix, and do not change practice classifications. The actual starting position comes from the qualifying order with the places added on. Coffee Corner Motorsport lists the practice positions as follows.
- Bortoleto: 8th in FP1, 11th in FP2
- Colapinto: 17th in FP1, 15th in FP2
- Lindblad: 9th in FP1, 13th in FP2
On FP2 form Bortoleto was 11th, but if the 20-place drop stands he will start near the back whatever he does in qualifying. Colapinto was 15th in FP2, so ten more places would put him close to the back as well. That is a simple projection from practice order and not a confirmed starting position until qualifying is run.
Why it matters now
Austin is the weekend where Antonelli can clinch the title, and any change in grid order feeds straight into the race result. Grid drops are a variable that shapes race strategy right after qualifying. Whether Lindblad's document reappears is worth checking around Saturday's qualifying.
